Blog Post 1!!! 3/6/2010 - Kicking things off

Making Social Media work for me

So.. .after months of nagging from housemate (and professional SEO expert) Dan I've finally decided to actually start a blog... and this is it! OK.. here we go.. Right then.. first question I have - what should I write about? And once I've written it.. who will read it?? I suppose I could Google it and I'm sure there are lots of very interesting articles on the subject but hey.. let's just wing it and see what turns out!

About me!

A little background history on me to kick things off as this is my first go at this.. I'm a freelance photographer based in Exmouth in Devon and have recently opened a studio with fellow photographer Claire Sloane. I work all over the UK and occasionally abroad.. I'm 28 and in my spare time I enjoy mountain biking, getting out on the water in boats and playing the drums! Right.. on to the main thing before this starts resembling an online dating profile..

Opening a photography studio!

A little about exmouthSTUDIO and working with Claire Sloane! I met Claire at the very first Createxe meeting at the Powder Monkey in January. Setting up a studio is something I've been planning for a long time and I had been organising things with another local photographer. Unfortunately due to a change of circumstances he had to move away which left me in need of a new partner! I got talking to Claire and.. to cut a rather long story short - she decided fill the void! A couple of weeks later we went to view the old Red Cross Hall in Exmouth and were both instantly blown away by the space... we moved in a week later (mainly thanks to our amazingly easy going and helpful landlord - Mike) . We held our opening party a few weeks back (brilliant fun!) and are now fully open for business. Myself and Claire have also worked together now on a number of event photography jobs as well as in the studio and I have to say - working with such a talented, attractive and positive person must be a constant inspiration to her! ;)

All change!

Over the last 3 weeks I've been working away a lot so I've made a change to the way I work! The big news for me in the last couple of weeks is I've stopped taking audio visual freelance tech work - previously I've done a fair bit of work on conferences and awards shows working in video technology.. Things like projection / PowerPoint / video distribution / plasma screen set up and so on. With the studio now being fully set up and a steady stream of photography booking coming in I've decided to put the AV work on the back burner to focus (pardon the pun!) fully on the photography.

Large format printing

With this in mind (and because I love gadgets) I've been investing in some new technology for the studio. I've just bought an Epson 7600 pro (Agfa Sherpa 24m) A1 photo printer which is brilliant - over the last few days I've been printing out everything and anything to test it out. It's going to make life so much easier being able to print out studio shots in house and it's also already adding value to the events and wedding photography. I knocked out some A1 contact sheets for a wedding I did last week on it today and they look brilliant!

Signing off..

I think that's probably enough for today - exciting things coming up for me over the next few weeks include a job in South Korea, shoot in Earls Court and all sorts of other photo bases shenanigans.. Check back soon to see how thins are going! Thanks for reading.. Edd!
